Redmagic today has officially launched its latest gaming smartphone, the Redmagic 8S Pro, for the Malaysian market. What sets this particular release apart from the original line-up that was launched back in February this year are the new colourways, as well as the inclusion of a more souped up version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.
In terms of aesthetics, the Redmagic 8S Pro models are mostly indifferent from the base versions, with the exception of their respective rear plate designs. The newer series is offered in either Platinum, Midnight or Aurora, though it’s worth noting that only the latter option is offered with an intricate-looking panel underneath a transparent rear case.
Apart from that, the phones retain the 6.8-inch 2480 x 1116 pixel AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and Gorilla Glass 5 protection from the original, as well as the16MP under-display selfie shooter and button layouts. Found on the back is a triple camera setup which consists of a 50MP main, 8MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro, while situated beside it on the left is the series’ signature ring-shaped RGB lighting system.
Under the hood, all three Redmagic 8S Pro models are equipped with a clocked-up version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which the company dubs as the “Leading Version”. Whether or not it has the same performance output as Samsung’s “For Galaxy” edition of the same chipset remains to be seen. Meanwhile, keeping the internals cool is the brand’s latest ICE 12.0 cooling system, which features a large VC cooling plate, a new duct structure, and cooling gel.
As for memory configurations, both the Platinum and Aurora variants of the Redmagic 8S Pro come with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS4.0 storage. The Midnight option, on the other hand, comes with a smaller set up of 12GB + 256GB.
Battery-wise, all three retain the original’s 6,000mAh battery capacity, though the charging rate has been toned down to just 65W, as opposed to the faster 80W rate that’s featured in their counterparts sold in the Chinese market. Regardless, a full charge is estimated to take just 40 minutes from zero to 100%, which is still pretty decent.
The new Redmagic 8S Pro line-up is slated to go on sale in Malaysia from 14 August 2023 onwards via the brand’s online store on Shopee and its official web store. The Midnight version will retail at RM3,699, while both the Platinum and Aurora colourways are priced at RM4,499.
