X, previously called Twitter, currently gives users the option to switch to dark mode if that is what they prefer. But it looks like it may not only be the default in the future, it may even be the only option. That is, if a recent tweet by owner Elon Musk is any indication.
The tweet in question simply reads “This platform will soon only have ‘dark mode’. It is better in every way”. Which may be the case for some people, but judging from the replies the tweet is getting, it is clearly far from a universal truth. This would also be especially true for people with astigmatism, who may experience more eye strain when using dark mode than the default light mode.

Currently, X allows you to manually toggle light mode, dark mode, or to just follow your system settings. The dark mode itself also has two options, one that has the background completely black, and another gentler Dim option that gives the background a dark blue hue instead. These are all pretty nice choices to have for some, but essential accessibility options for others.
All in all, removing options just seems like a less-than-ideal idea, especially accessibility options that allow people to spend more time comfortably on the app. Which, you’d think would be what Elon Musk wants for X considering the many reports on the company’s financial situation. But then again, considering Musk decided in the first place to change the name of the former bird app, this may be par for the course.
