Samsung tonight has officially launched the latest iteration of its compact-sized foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip5, during its second major Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea. Not only does it come with plenty of upgrades in specifications, newly introduced on it is a larger external display on its upper shell, dubbed by the company as the “Flex Window”, which offers users with plenty of functionalities without needing to unfold it first.
Design-wise, the Galaxy Z Flip5 more or less shares the same form factor as its predecessor, though Samsung touts it to be much lighter and thinner. The latter of which is achievable thanks to an improved hinge mechanism introduced on the phone, therefore allowing it to fold completely flat with no visible gap. To be more specific, the device weighs 187g while it measures at 71.9 x 85.1 x 15.1mm folded and 71.9 x 165.1 x 6.9mm when unfolded. It also has a water resistant rating of IPX8.
Then we have the new Flex Window screen, which measures at 3.4-inches and features a Super AMOLED panel with 720 x 748 pixel resolution, 306 PPI and a refresh rate of 60Hz. The larger screen estate allows for more apps and features to be used from here, including the ability to read and reply to WhatsApp messages, answer or reject calls, immediate access to Quick Settings, and many more. Samsung promises to add even more applications that can fully support the Flex Window mode in the near future, including those specific to our region.
As before, you can also use the external screen to function as a viewfinder to frame your selfies when shooting with the main cameras. However, this time around, you’ll get even more coverage in your shots, thanks to the display’s larger size.
In terms of specifications, most of the hardware featured on the Galaxy Z Flip5 are unchanged from last year’s model. These include its internal memory configurations, battery capacity, charging speed support and camera sensors, while upgraded components (apart from the aforementioned Flex Window) include its internal display type, connectivity support, chipset, and mobile operating system.
To go into further detail, the new compact foldable comes with a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with 2640 x 1080 pixel resolution and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. There’s no on-screen biometrics, but there is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for user authentication. Meanwhile, under its hood is the same Qualcomm flagship chipset that’s featured in the Galaxy S23 series, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, while paired together with it is a RAM capacity of 8GB and an internal storage capacity of up to 512GB.
Powering the Galaxy Z Flip5 is the same 3,700mAh dual battery as before, along with 25W fast charging support. On the software front, the Galaxy Z Flip5 is running on Android 13 via Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1 interface.
For imaging, situated below the Flex Window is a dual camera setup consisting of a 12MP primary sensor with Dual Pixel AF and OIS, as well as a 12MP ultra-wide with an FOV of 123-degrees. Also not forgetting the selfie camera that’s housed within the punch-hole cutout on the phone’s internal display, which is powered by a 10MP sensor with an FOV of 85-degrees.
The all-new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 is slated to be available in Malaysia from 18 August onwards via the brand’s official online and physical stores, as well as authorised distributors nationwide. It is priced at RM4,499 for the 256GB trim, and RM4,999 for the 512GB option. As for colour options, the foldable is offered in Mint, Lavender, Cream and Graphite, while colours such as Gray, Blue, Green and Yellow are only offered as online exclusives.
