It’s been almost two months since ChatGPT got a standalone app on mobile for devices running iOS (read: iPhones). And it looks like Android’s turn is finally coming. Such is what OpenAI claims on Twitter, with a link to the Google Play Store for said app.
The text accompanying the link in the tweet reads “Announcing ChatGPT for Android! The app will be rolling out to users next week, and you can pre-order in the Google Play Store starting today”. Said tweet was posted over the weekend, so if you’re being optimistic, you can probably expect actual availability of the Android app to be sometime this week.

Calling it a pre-order though is a pretty odd choice of phrase, considering you’re not really buying anything. Hitting the link to the Google Play Store page of the ChatGPT app, you’ll be greeted with the “install” button, but with a timer icon next to it. The page also tells you that the only perk of “pre-registering” is to have the app automatically installed when it actually becomes available.
As we’ve mentioned before when the iOS app was announced, the app versions of ChatGPT is pretty similar to the web version. One advantage the app has over the web version is the “Whisper” feature that lets you use voice input. On the flip side, you don’t get plugin support for third-party APIs. Things look to be basically the same for the Android app as it was for iOS.
Worth mentioning once again though is the many copycat apps, a fair number of which may be malicious in nature. In fact, searching for the ChatGPT app on the Google Play Store may list the real one by OpenAI as the first real option, but with an ad for one of the many other bandwagon hoppers above it instead.
