The successor to Nothing’s first smartphone, the Phone (2), has finally launched in Malaysia. And as already revealed by the company prior to this, the handset will only be offered in two memory configurations, namely 12GB RAM + 256GB storage and 12GB + 512GB. Both of which are available in either White or Dark Grey colourways.
Apart from missing the starting 8GB + 128GB model, everything else about the Phone (2) remains unchanged from its initial global unveiling from earlier this week. To recap, the second generation Nothing handset features a larger 6.7-inch LTPO OLED display with 1080 x 2412 pixel resolution, adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, up to 1600 nits brightness, Always On capabilities, and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It also has an optical under-display fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, and an IP54 rating for splash, water and dust resistance.
On the inside, featured together with the aforementioned memory configurations is a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 flagship chipset with 5G support. Powering the Phone (2) is a larger 4,700mAh battery with 45W fast charging support via USB-C, as well as 15W wireless and 5W reverse wireless charging capabilities.
In terms of software, the handset runs on the Nothing 2.0 OS which is based on Android 13, and features several first-party apps such as an audio recorder, and a new Glyph Composer tool that lets you create and share your own custom-made ringtones and lighting effects. In line with the UI experience, also included are similarly themed widgets that can be moved around and even resized accordingly on the screen.
Like its predecessor, the biggest highlight of the Phone (2) is the Glyph interface that can be found on its rear panel, which is protected by a new rounded glass cover by the way. Though the layout of the system is almost identical to the one before, it is actually segmented into 11 LED strips and offers even more lighting zones. With this, not only are the Glyphs able to provide more dynamic effects, they can also function as a volume level indicator and even as a countdown timer. Nothing says it plans to integrate the latter feature to ride-sharing apps such as Grab Car but for now, this ability is only limited to Uber in certain countries.
Last but not least is the imaging system. Found on the back of the Phone (2) is a dual camera setup, which consists of a newer Sony IMX890 50MP primary sensor and a Samsung JN1 50MP ultra-wide. Meanwhile, housed within the punch-hole cutout on its display is a new 32MP selfie camera.
In Malaysia, the new Nothing Phone (2) is priced at RM2,999 for the 12GB + 256GB trim, and RM3,499 for the 12GB + 512GB option. Come 22 July 2023, the handset will be sold via the brand’s official online stores on Shopee and Lazada, as well as authorised retailers such as Yes5G, DirectD, TMT, Urban Republic, Tac Mobile and Vivid Concepts.
