Despite only officially launching in Malaysia next week, Tesla has already announced the availability and pricing of its Model Y SUV for the local market. According to the company’s press release, the EV will be offered in three variants: Rear-wheel drive (RWD), Long Range, and Performance. All of which are expected to be delivered by early 2024, and can now be booked via Tesla Malaysia’s official website.
The Tesla Model Y is the company’s latest all-electric crossover SUV, which is also built on the same platform as its Model 3 sedan. The EV is touted to be one of the safest of its category, boasting a 5-star rating from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and Euro NCAP. All three variants offer seating up to five passengers, 2.1 cubic metres of cargo space, and are available in five colour options: Pearl White Multi-Coat, Solid Black, Midnight Silver Metallic, Deep Blue Metallic, and Red Multi-Coat.
On the inside, the Model Y comes with an all-glass roof, vegan leather upholstery, a 15-inch infotainment centre console, advanced climate control and HEPA filtration, two wireless chargers for smartphones, a total of four USB-C ports (two in front, two in the back), as well as a premium audio system which consists of 13 speakers, a subwoofer and two amplifiers. It’s worth noting that you can choose to include either Tesla’s Enhanced Autopilot or Full Self-Driving capabilities, or change its default all-black interiors to a black and white one. However, doing these would cost you extra.
The RWD variant of the Model Y is equipped with a single motor that offers 255kW (347hp) of power and 420Nm of torque, enabling for a century sprint time of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 217km/h. Its onboard battery has a capacity of 57.5kWh which provides a rated range of 430km on the WLTP cycle.
The Long Range option, on the other hand, comes with an all-wheel-drive (AWD) drivetrain via dual motors that pushes 378kW (514hp) of power and 493Nm of torque. It is claimed to hit 0 – 100km/h in just 5.0 seconds and has the same top speed as the RWD model, while its bigger 75kWh battery offers an extended range of 533km based on the WLTP cycle.
Then finally we have the Performance variant. Unlike its siblings, this particular Model Y model comes with a beefier dual-motor AWD system that provides a power output of 393kW (534hp) and 660Nm of torque. Nought to hundred acceleration is boosted to just 3.7 seconds, while its top speed maxes at 250km/h. Meanwhile, its range is rated at 514km based on the WLTP cycle.
For the Malaysian market, the Tesla Model Y is priced at RM199,000 for the RWD trim, RM249,000 for the Long Range, and RM288,000 for the top-end Performance model. Extras such as the Enhanced Autopilot, Full Self-Driving as well as the alternate Black and White interiors will cost an extra RM16,000, RM32,000 and RM5,000 respectively. Additionally, the company notes that owners may also claim individual income tax relief of up to RM2,500 on expenses related to the cost of installation, rental, purchase, including hire-purchase equipment or subscription fees for EV charging facilities, for the assessment year of 2023.
