Nothing has fully unveiled its second smartphone to the world tonight after months of teasing and hype building. As promised by the company, the new Phone (2) arrives with major improvements in hardware, features, and more.
Design-wise, Nothing’s second-generation smartphone may seem identical to its predecessor at first glance. However, it is actually slightly larger and features a new rounded glass back for added comfort. The signature Glyph lighting system on the Phone (2)’s back features 11 segmented LED strips with 33 lighting zones, which allows for new use cases. On top of notifying users of incoming calls or messages, the interface can now show the current volume level and even act as a countdown timer.
Other improvements include a new sensor in the back, which helps the phone to automatically adjust the intensity of the Glyph interface depending on current lighting conditions. Nothing says this addition aims to address a common complaint on the Phone (1), where users have noted that its lighting system was too bright and can be very distracting.
As for the small red indicator light and the supposed switch on the rear plate which were featured in the initial teasers of the Phone (2), it has been revealed that the former will light up when a video is being recorded. The latter, however, serves no purpose as it is actually located behind the phone’s glass back, so there’s no way for the user to interact with it.
In front, the new Nothing Phone (2) arrives with a larger 6.7-inch flat LTPO OLED display with FHD+ (1080 x 2412 pixel) resolution, adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, up to 1600 nits brightness, Always On capabilities, and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It also features an optical under-display fingerprint sensor, stereo speakers, three high-definition microphones, as well as IP54 splash, water and dust resistance.
Under the hood, the phone is equipped with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 flagship chipset, up to 12GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of storage. Also onboard is the Android 13-powered Nothing OS 2.0 interface which adds new widgets, theme colours, folder layouts, illustrated covers, as well as the cool Glyph Composer tool that lets you create and share your own custom-made ringtones and lighting effects.
Powering the Phone (2) is a larger 4,700mAh battery which offers faster 45W charging support via USB-C. According to Nothing, plugging in the phone to a compatible charger will take approximately 55 minutes for a full charge. Besides that, it also comes with 15W wireless and 5W reverse wireless charging capabilities.
In terms of imaging, featured on the back of the smartphone is a dual camera setup which includes a 50MP primary with OIS and 2x digital zoom, as well as a 50MP ultra-wide shooter. Nothing adds that the Phone (2) is now capable of recording 4K resolution videos at up to 60fps, which exceeds its predecessor’s 30fps limit. Meanwhile, housed within the punch-hole cutout on its display is a larger 32MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.
The Nothing Phone (2) is available in white and dark grey colours, and is expected to ship out in certain regions starting 17 July onwards. For select markets, the device starts at US$599 (~RM2,790) for the 8GB + 128GB configuration, US$699 (~RM3,255) for the 12GB + 256GB, and US$799 (~RM3,721) for the 12GB + 512GB trim. Nothing will reveal the pricing and availability for its second smartphone in Malaysia later this Friday on 14 July 2023.
