Threads, an Instagram app, is the new social media platform in town, likely looking to capitalise on whenever a Twitter exodus happens. Though anyone coming from the bird app would see that the Meta app is sorely lacking in terms of features. Making things worse is among the biggest feature missing is the ability to delete your Threads profile without also wiping your Instagram account.
This fine print, as it were is buried under Settings > Account > Deactivate profile > Learn More. Also noted here is the strange limitation of users only being able to deactivate their accounts once a week. Deleting individual posts, on the other hand is no issue.
To be clear, deactivating your Threads account will hide your profile, posts and likes. Logging in after brings everything back up, so there’s no nuclear option for those who want it, but don’t want to let go of their Instagram account.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri has explained on the new social media that because it is powered by Instagram, the two are treated as a singular account. For what it’s worth, the team is “looking into a way to delete your Threads account separately”. But because that process is only starting now, it will be quite some time for that option to finally be available. Naturally, this may be cause to hesitate if you’ve not already jumped onto the bandwagon.
In a separate post, Mosseri acknowledged that Threads is missing a lot of basic functionality, like search, messaging, a feed just for who you follow or follow you, among others. This does give the impression that this new social media app was pushed out solely to take advantage of the rocky situation at Twitter, as mentioned earlier. For now, novelty will continue to carry it for awhile, but that probably won’t last until some of these basic features get added.
