If you’re a U Mobile user on the Giler Unlimited GX50 postpaid or GX12 prepaid plan and noticed that your line now supports 5G despite not originally supporting it, then you’re not alone. Having experienced this for myself earlier today, I reached out to the telco to find out what’s going on.
Replying to my query, U Mobile confirms that it will be rolling out a seven-day free trial for its 5G service to those on its older postpaid and prepaid plans, which is scheduled to start this Friday on 30 June and ending on 6 July 2023. As to why some users on these packages are already connected to the line, the telco explained that an early access has been issued to a select number of subscribers in order for them to enjoy the faster connection ahead of the actual trial period.
U Mobile has since updated its website’s FAQ page to include the necessary information regarding the upcoming trial, which you can access by clicking this link. For your convenience, I’ll lay out some important details in this article to save you the trouble.
In regards to eligibility, the telco revealed that the trial is applicable to prepaid users who are subscribed to its GX12, GX30, GX38 and GX43 plans before 21 June, as well as active postpaid users on its Giler Unlimited GX50 and Unlimited Hero Postpaid P78. Of course, you’ll also need to own a 5G-enabled device and be located within the telco’s coverage zone in order to enjoy the faster speeds.
Subscribers will be notified by U Mobile via SMS regarding the activation of the trial once it commences on 30 June. And as mentioned earlier, users will get to enjoy the service’s 5G connection at no extra charge.
Interestingly, U Mobile notes that those on both aforementioned prepaid and postpaid plans will still be allowed access to the 5G network after the trial ends, but at a capped speed according to their respective packages. As noted in the FAQ page, the former are capped at 3-12 Mbps while the latter are limited to 5-6 Mbps.
To enjoy full-speed 5G after the trial period, users may opt to purchase the telco’s new Speed Booster addons, which will be available starting 7 July onwards via its MyUMobile mobile app. U Mobile GX prepaid users can choose either the 2 hour or 24 hours Speed Booster that’s offered at RM1 or RM5 respectively, while those on GX50 and P78 postpaid can choose between the 5G Data Booster or Hotspot Booster that’s available for RM10 or RM5 respectively.
