Insta360 last night unveiled its latest action camera, the GO 3, which is touted to be its smallest and lightest camera yet. Like its predecessors, the new device features a capsule-like form factor but instead of the same all-in-one charging case, accompanying it is a new Action Pod body which comes with a flip-out touchscreen and then some.
The Insta360 GO 3 is about the size of a human thumb, measuring at only 25.6 x 54.5 x 23.2 mm and weighing 35.5g. Featured on it is a 35mm equivalent ultra-wide lens on top of new sensor that’s capable of recording up to 2.7k resolution videos at 30 fps, which is a step over its predecessor’s 1440p capability. The main camera unit itself is also certified IPX8 for water resistance, claimed to be able to withstand depths of up to 5 meters.
Meanwhile, the included Action Pod is larger and has a measurement of 63.5 x 47.6 x 29.5 mm. Apart from a dock where the main unit can be attached magnetically, it also features a 2.2-inch flip touchscreen in the back. In terms of weather resistance, keep in mind that the case only comes with an IPX4 rating, which means it can only withstand splashes and cannot be submerged underwater.
Using both halves of the Insta360 GO 3 together enables for a familiar action camera experience, but its ability to separate is what gives it an edge over the competition. In fact, you can use the main body independently on its own or have it work in tandem with the Action Pod, with the latter doubling as a remote screen and controller.
On its own, the GO 3 can also be attached to dedicated mounts, such as a stand or the included Magnet Pendent – much like its predecessors. Other hardware-based improvements include upgraded built-in dual microphones, which are promised to offer clearer and crisper audio than before.
Features-wise, making a return on the new action camera is the company’s signature FlowState Stabilisation, 360 Horizon Lock and TimeShift, which are accompanied by the newer Pre-recording, Loop Recording and Time Capture functions. The latter of which basically lets you set a schedule for the GO 3, thus allowing it to start recording certain events (ie: a sunrise timelapse) at a specific time.
As for battery performance, Insta360 says it has boosted the capacity of the device’s onboard battery, which lets it record videos at up to 45 minutes in 1080p at 30 fps. When mounted onto the Action Pod, the recording time is extended up to 170 minutes in the same format. Users will be glad to know that the new action camera features better heat dissipation, ensuring that it would not overheat when shooting videos for extended periods.
Additionally, the company says it has removed the 30-minute cap for each clip, therefore enabling continuous recording until the GO 3 runs out of battery completely, or once its internal memory is filled up. Speaking of which, Insta360 is offering three storage options for the camera: 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. It does not come with external memory card support, unfortunately.
You can now find the all-new Insta360 GO 3 on the brand’s official Shopee store, but keep in mind that the 64GB model is the only configuration available as a standalone, or bundled together with the Get Set Kit, Bike Kit and Motorcycle Kit. Those hoping to get the 32GB or 128GB will have to wait for another two weeks, though you may also choose to pre-order them now via the same page. The 32GB, 64GB and 128GB starts from RM1,779, RM1,869 and RM1,999 respectively.
