Mercedes-Benz Malaysia today has launched two new AMG-branded EVs for the local market. The first being the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53, followed by the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 – both of which share the carmaker’s EVA (Electric Vehicle Architecture) platform, though each offer different performances and slightly different designs. And unlike the locally-assembled Mercedes-Benz EQS 500 4MATIC, the two newly debuted models are imported directly from Germany.
First off is the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53, which pretty much shares a similar design as the EQS 500; featuring a four-door sedan layout but with hatchback opening and closing rear boot compartment. However, what sets it apart from the aforementioned is a slew of model-specific changes including a Panamericana front grille, front splitter, flics and fins on the air intakes, air curtains on the front bumper, AMG side sill panels, a rear diffuser, rear spoiler, and 21-inch AMG cross-spoke alloy wheels.
Its interior is decked out with AMG-styled finishings, including a Performance steering wheel, illuminated door sills, carbon-fibre elements, Microcut microfibre roof liner, and Nappa leather upholstery – all of which are in black and space grey colours. In front is a wide Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen that consists of three different sections: a 12.3-inch instrument cluster in front of the steering wheel, a 17.7-inch touchscreen for the central infotainment system, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen panel for the front passenger. Also onboard is a Burmester 3D surround sound system, a heads-up display, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.
Other features include Digital Light headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, AMG Night package, red-painted brake callipers, a panoramic sliding sunroof, 64-colour ambient lighting modes, powered front seats with memory, ventilation and heating functions, Keyless-Go Comfort, Hands-Free Access, and Easy-Pack tailgate. For safety and assistance, the EV comes with the Driving Assistant Plus package with Active Distance Assist Distronic with stop and go, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Steering Assist, as well as Pre-Safe, Urban Guard, Parking Package with remote parking functions, a 360-degree camera, Active Parking Assist, Memory Parking Assist, and tyre pressure monitoring.
Performance-wise, the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 is equipped with an all-wheel drive system comprising two electric motors that are featured on each axle. Combined, these offer a power output of 658 PS (649hp or 484kW) and 950Nm of torque, which in turn enables the EV to achieve 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 220km/h. Optionally, picking the AMG Dynamic Plus package grants a higher performance of 761 PS (751hp or 560kW) and 1,020Nm, which allows for a faster 0-100km/h time of just 3.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 250km/h.
The onboard lithium-ion battery pack features a capacity of 108.4kWh, granting the EV a range of up to 571km based on the WLTP standard. Charging-wise, it supports either up to 11kW Type 2 connection AC charging or up to 200kW CCS2 DC fast charging, which allows for a full charge in over 11 hours or 80% in just 31 minutes respectively.
Next in the list is the new Mercedes-AMG EQE 53. It pretty much shares the same overall external design as its sibling; save for a unique Panamericana grille with hot-stamped chrome vertical struts, different front and rear bumpers, a more traditional sedan-styled rear boot, and 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels. Its interiors are also similar to the EQS 53 with the exception of the Artico leather and Microcut microfibre upholstery, while the internal systems and features are exactly identical.
Of course, expect the EV’s performance to be completely different as well. Unlike its sibling, the dual motor all-wheel drive system on the EQE 53 provides a slightly lower output of 626 PS (617hp or 460kW) and 950Nm of torque, but a faster 0-100km/h acceleration of 3.5 seconds and the same top speed of 220km/h. There’s also the optional Dynamic Plus package that raises the EQE 53’s output to 687PS (677hp or 505kW) and 1,000Nm, entailing an increased 0-100km/h acceleration of 3.3 seconds and a higher top speed of 240km/h.
Meanwhile, powering the car is a smaller 90.56kWh lithium-ion battery, which only provides it a range of up to 527km based on the WLTP standard. For charging, supported on the EQE 53 is up to 11kW via a Type 2 AC input or up to 170kW fast charging via CCS2 DC input, which allows for a full charge in over eight hours or 80% in just 32 minutes respectively.
The all-new Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 and EQE 53 are set to retail from RM798,888 and from RM649,888 respectively, on-the-road without insurance plus 10% sales tax. Both models are available in Malaysia from today onwards.
