Apple opened up WWDC 2023 with the announcement of a new MacBook Air M2 laptop. As of today, the Air family now comes with a bigger, more expansive 15-inch option.
The breakdown of the new 15-inch MacBook Air M2 is relatively straightforward. Like the 13-inch, the laptop is still powered by the fruit company’s M2 chipset that launched exactly one year, to date. Mind you, the notebook is merely using the standard M2 chip, and not the M2 Max and newly announced M2 Ultra, the latter seemingly and currently being exclusive to the Mac Studio and Mac Pro.
That means the 15-inch MacBook Air M2 is still powered by the 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine SoC. Not only that, it also delivers as much as 100GB/s of memory bandwidth with up to 24GB of unified memory.
Apple also claims that its 15-inch MacBook Air M2 is the thinnest MacBook Air in its class, with a total thickness of 11.5mm when closed. Not only that, but the fruit company also boasts that it’s the lightest 15-inch notebook it has made, weighing in at just 1.51kg. On subject of the 15.3-inch display panel, it also uses the same Liquid Retina technology, supporting up to one billion colours and a peak brightness of 500 nits. Unfortunately, that dreadful forehead is still there, but it does house the Full HD FaceTime camera.
The 15-inch MacBook Air M2 also features what Apple says is a “phenomenal” new six-speaker sound system, comprising two tweeters and two sets of force-cancelling woofers. Ports-wise, the laptop comes with two Thunderbolt ports, a MagSafe charging port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Like its 13-inch counterpart, the 15-inch MacBook Air M2 is runs on macOS Ventura, and yes, you’ll also be getting all of the feature updates that were announced during at WWDC 2023. That said, the company from Cupertino says that the laptop will be getting the Sonoma update later this year.
In terms of pricing, the 15-inch MacBook Air M2 will start from RM6,199, but RM5,729 for education. It will be available in four colourways that include midnight, starlight, silver, and space grey. In conjunction to the launch of the new laptop, Apple is also dropping the price for the 13-inch MacBook Air M2, with the new pricing starting at RM5,199 and RM4,729 for education.
