If you’ve noticed that the Live TV feature on HBO GO has gone missing, you’re not alone. Other users around the world have also reported experiencing the same issue online on Reddit, social media, and even our own forum. There’s actually an official explanation for this but brace yourself, as it won’t be the greatest news you’ll be hearing today, especially if you’re a subscriber to the service.
As quietly revealed in the FAQ page on HBO GO’s official website, HBO Asia has actually discontinued the Live TV (or Live channels) on the platform since last week on 25 May. It added that this particular feature will no longer be accessible on the HBO website and applications, but notes that the offered channels are still available on a number of partner-owned and operated platforms. Unfortunately, the company did not offer an explanation on why the company has decided to remove the feature altogether.
“Alternatively, you can watch the same great series, award-winning documentaries and latest blockbuster movies on demand on the HBO GO website and applications anytime, anywhere on any device,” it wrote on the same FAQ page. To put it simply, HBO has decided to shift the streaming platform’s direction to provide its users with only on-demand content moving forward – somewhat making it more akin to its sibling, HBO Max. We should note that the latter is still not available in Malaysia despite WarnerMedia’s expressed interest in a Southeast Asian launch back in 2021.
As expected, subscribers to HBO GO did not take the move well. Many were left in the dark as they were unaware of the company’s decision to discontinue the Live TV feature, while others expressed their disappointment in the removal. Some are even considering cancelling their subscription from the platform, arguing that the feature has been the main reason for them to use the streaming service.
Interestingly, HBO may have something new on the horizon, as pointed out by a user Meyoko1013 on Reddit. In a reply to the user via an email, the company’s customer service wrote “We understand that this change may bring about some disappointment, but we have an exciting alternative for you.” However, it appears that the reply ended abruptly as HBO did not clarify further regarding the supposed “alternative” which it plans to offer.
It is also possible that it may be referring to the on-demand content that was mentioned earlier rather than an upcoming feature. Nevertheless, best to keep an eye out for any new developments surrounding HBO GO in the near future – that is, if you’re still planning to stick around the service after all of this.
