The Sony Inzone family of gaming headsets that were announced last year were interesting as they were launched independent of PlayStation sub branding. But now, the name that is almost synonymous with console gaming has announced something that looks like it’s meant to appeal to the wider consumer electronics market. It’s a pair of TWS earbuds which, for now, is simply known as the PlayStation Earbuds.
Announced as part of the recent PlayStation Showcase, these earbuds carry just about all of the PS5 flavours that you’d expect. From its white and black aesthetic to the carrying case, it all looks to match the current generation console.
Beyond the way it looks though, details of the PlayStation Earbuds are very scarce. In a press release, the company says that these are made to “feature new wireless technology developed by SIE”, which also involves lossless audio and low latency capabilities. Which sound all well and good, but it remains to be seen if it can really deliver on these claims.
In the accessories showcase video, the company also says that “they simultaneously connect to smartphones via Bluetooth”. This sounds like the wireless tech that connects to PS5 and PC will make use of a dedicated dongle, and that the PlayStation Earbuds can play audio from both sources at the same time.
Of course, all this is just us reading into what has been presented. PlayStation says that more details will be made available in the months to come, and that the earbuds themselves will be launching later in the year. Considering we’re already near the halfway point of 2023, it shouldn’t be too long a wait. Naturally, expect comparisons to be made to other Sony earbuds like the WF-1000XM4, WF-C700N or LinkBuds S, the way the Inzone headsets were compared.
