Netflix has been gradually rolling out its Extra Member feature since earlier this year and it seems the time has finally come for Malaysian users to cough up the additional fee. The streaming giant has announced that it has started sending emails to subscribers who are sharing their accounts with those outside their households.
Adding an extra member is only enabled for those who subscribe to the Standard or Premium plan, with a quota of one and up to two extra members respectively. For each extra member, it will cost an additional RM13 per month on top of your subscription and the person who owns the account will be charged with it.
To add one, you can go into your account’s settings and find the new Extra Members section. You can then purchase a slot and send an invitation for the person outside of your household to accept.
Once accepted, the extra member will be able to transfer their profile, which includes their viewing history and other account information, into their own account with a separate password. Extra members can only stream Netflix on one device at a time and they are limited to the features and restrictions of the primary account, such as 1080p streaming resolution for Standard and 4K for Premium accounts.
The primary account can choose the change or remove the extra member slot at any time, at a maximum of two times per billing cycle. For someone to be eligible as an extra member under your account, they must be in the same country as you and you cannot be using the service through Netflix-included packages or third-party billed accounts.
Netflix has not clarified exactly what kind of metrics would require a person to have to pay the additional fee, such as how long can someone use the account outside of the household before they would be detected as a user who needs to be an extra member. The company’s help page also did not say what would be the consequence of that person not opting into the extra member feature, but it’s safe to assume they would eventually lose access to the primary account.
