LEGO today has introduced yet another product into its retro video game-themed collection. Joining the Atari 2600 and Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is the all-new Pac-Man Arcade set, which is basically a desktop-friendly replica of the game’s original arcade cabinet from the 1980s. And yes, much like the two sets from before, it too comes with playable features and extra goodies that would please collectors and fans alike.
According to the Danish toymaker, the arcade cabinet stands 12.5-inch tall and is made of 2,651 pieces of bricks. The replica itself has yellow side panels with the original Pac-Man graphic, a marquee featuring its retro logo, joystick and buttons, a coin slot that lights up, and the game itself that’s displayed on the main screen. There’s also a removable panel on the back which reveals the inner workings of the LEGO replica.
As mentioned earlier, the Pac-Man Arcade set comes with plenty of playability. The first of such features is the aforementioned coin slot, which emits a red glow when you press one of the buttons on the cabinet. Next is the screen, where cranking the lever on the side of the cabinet will activate the internal mechanism that moves Pac-Man and the four pursuing ghosts (Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde) around – simulating actual gameplay. It’s also worth mentioning that doing so will also affect the score counter on top, which is kind of neat.
Meanwhile, included together in the set are two bonus items. One of which is a pedestal with larger versions of Pac-Man, Blinky and Clyde that can be displayed on its own or placed on top of the cabinet. By rotating the three figures via a mechanism found on the back of the base will have the titular character running away from the two ghosts, or chasing after their “turn-to-blue” versions.
And if you thought one arcade machine isn’t enough, the second of which is a diorama featuring a smaller version of the cabinet, which comes with an accompanying LEGO minifig. Like the item above, this particular piece can be displayed on its own, or even stored within the main model.
The new LEGO Pac-Man Arcade set is slated to be released in certain countries on 4 June 2023 for a recommended retail price of US$270 (~RM1,227). Its availability in Malaysia has not been confirmed at this time.
