It appears that Apple’s audio-focused subsidiary, Beats, is preparing to launch an upgraded version of its Studio Buds product that was released back in 2021. Based on 9to5Mac’s findings in the latest iOS 16.4 beta, the upcoming earbuds will be known as the Beats Studio Buds Plus (or more accurately, Buds+).
The new variant is shown to sport what appears to be the same design as its predecessor, complete with the same oval-like charging case and stem-less form factor for both earbuds. The only noticeable difference is the new black and gold colour scheme that’s not offered on the existing Studio Buds. Despite this, the unchanged design may disappoint some consumers, especially those who’ve been waiting for a new Beats TWS after last year’s Fit Pro.
In terms of features, a report by The Verge claims people familiar with the matter say that the upcoming Beats Studio Buds Plus will feature improved active noise cancelling (ANC) and transparency modes. They also added that, much like its predecessor, the new product will not feature an Apple audio chip such as the AirPods’ W1 or H1, but rather an unspecified proprietary one by Beats itself.
The lack of an Apple chip means that the upcoming buds will lack certain Apple ecosystem features like automatic device switching, instant pairing or audio sharing. However, despite this, sources claim that it does come with “Hey Siri” support. All things considered, these pretty much mirror the buds’ predecessor, which has been intended to be the brand’s more affordable entry that appeals to both iOS and Android users.
It’s also not known whether it will feature any other changes that sets it apart from the vanilla Studio Buds, especially in terms of audio driver size, battery life, or water resistance rating. For your reference, the original model features 8.2 mm drivers, up to 8 hours of playback on a single charge (24 hours when used together with its case), and has a water resistance rating of IPX4.
Seeing that details regarding the new Beats Studio Buds Plus are included in the iOS 16.4 beta that’s slated to be released to the public in the coming days, it’s possible that the official unveiling could happen very soon. Pricing-wise, it wouldn’t be surprising if the product would launch at a slightly higher price point than the original, which is currently retailing for RM 629 in Malaysia.
