HONOR today has launched its latest midrange smartphone in Malaysia, which also happens to be a variant of its X8 series. Unlike its sibling that debuted last year, the new HONOR X8a packs a MediaTek chipset, a larger screen, and a 100 MP primary sensor as part of its rear camera setup.
Design-wise, the phone shares a similar design language as the HONOR X8; sporting a flat surrounding frame, metallic rear panel, and a square-shaped camera island. Its display measures at 6.7-inches, featuring a LTPS LCD panel with a punch-hole camera cutout, 2388 x 1080 pixel resolution, 16.7 million colours output, and multi-touch support. Also onboard is a side mounted lock and fingerprint sensor combo, dual nano SIM card support, as well as a USB-C port for charging and data transfers. Unfortunately, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack for traditional ear/headphone support.
Under the hood, the new HONOR X8a is equipped with a 4G-enabled MediaTek Helio G88 chipset, which is slightly lower in performance when compared to its sibling’s Snapdragon 480+ processor. Accompanying it is a built-in Mali-G52 MC2 GPU, as well as a single memory configuration that consists of 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. Its battery capacity is also smaller, coming in at only 4,500 mAh, but supports the brand’s 22.5 W SuperCharge capability. And just in case you’re wondering, a compatible charger is included in the phone’s packaging.
As for imaging, found on the back of the new midrange smartphone is a triple camera setup which consists of the aforementioned 100 MP primary sensor, along with 5 MP ultra-wide, and a 2 MP macro. Meanwhile, housed within the camera cutout on its display is a 16 MP selfie shooter with 2D face recognition. HONOR says the phone is capable of recording videos at up to 1080 x 1920 pixels via its front and rear cameras.
The HONOR X8a is slated to be available for purchase in Malaysia via the brand’s official stores and authorised retailers starting from 11 February 2023, and will be available in Cyan Lake, Titanium Silver, as well as Midnight Black colour options. Interestingly, the phone will retail for RM 999, which is also the same price point as its sibling when it launched locally back in August of last year.
