The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the direct sequel to Breath of the Wild, is set to be released in May of 2023. Being a marquee series, there was never really any doubt that Nintendo would be preparing a special edition Switch OLED for it. But while the game is still nearly half a year away, it looks like the limited edition hardware is ready and waiting. So it’s only natural that what it looks like gets leaked in the meantime.
The images of the Nintendo Switch OLED The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition and its box were initially posted on the Famiboards forums. They look to have been removed, but not before being reposted on Reddit. The images aren’t of the best quality, what with the poor lighting and the phone camera watermark, but otherwise it gives us a good enough look of the special edition handheld console hybrid. And as you’d expect from a special edition by Nintendo, it’s quite the looker.
Overall, motifs of The Legend of Zelda in general, as well as Tears of the Kingdom specifically, are everywhere. The dock maintains its usual white base colour, but with the golden prints to represent the game. Things are also a lot more impressive in front compared to the back, as usual.
It’s pretty much the same story with the Joy-Cons, though the difference here is more stark. At the back they are mostly white, as with the dock, but in front, the two halves present their own contrast. The left piece is a mix of black on gold reminiscent of ruins, while the right one has what looks like white on gold, with more circular patterns.
It remains to be seen if this leak will mean that Nintendo will be announcing the Switch OLED The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition early. Usually, special editions don’t get announced nearly half a year in advance of the game itself, but this leak would have spoiled the surprise somewhat.
