Cyberpunk 2077 released two years ago in a horrible state, but the game has seen gradual improvements and is seen as much better today than every before. Then came the Edgerunners Netflix back in September, and the game is virtually revitalised. With one major expansion on the way, publisher CD Projekt has said that the company has intentions to release a Game of the Year (GOTY) edition for Cyberpunk 2077 in 2023.
This was mentioned by company CEO Adam Kicinski during an investor meeting, as initially reported by StockWatch.pl. He was quoted as saying that “it’s the natural order of things”, drawing comparisons to The Witcher 3; WIld Hunt which also got a GOTY edition following the release of two expansions Hearts of Stone, and Blood and Wine.
You might be thinking “hang on, Cyberpunk 2077 so far only has one announced expansion in the form of Phantom Liberty”. And that’s not coming out until 2023. For a game with only one major DLC to get a GOTY edition, to say it’s a bit strange is no understatement. But on that front, the report notes that the game is getting another “large update”, which is currently “being prepared”.
With that, the eventual release that may be called Cyberpunk 2077 GOTY Edition will at least have two major expansions like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. That’s not taking away that the timeline does feel a bit rushed if it really is coming out in 2023, considering the first DLC is only coming out in the same year, with barely any details of the second available.
While nothing much else is mentioned in the report, at least we know that Cyberpunk 2077 will be getting a second major expansion to justify a GOTY edition. As for whether or not it will really be out as soon as next year, while it’s not impossible, it’s probably more realistic to expect a delay of some sort.
