As science fiction action films go, Starship Troopers is among the more recognisable names of the genre. There have been a number of attempts at video game adaptations, but they have mostly been obscured to all but the most avid fans of the franchise. But there is a new one coming out next year, called Starship Troopers: Extermination.
The game is described as a 12-player squad-based FPS, with players being split into squads of four, with players picking between Assault, Support and Defense classes. There are objectives to complete beyond killing every alien bug you see, such as resource gathering, but there are also elements of base building and resource management. Then at some point, you’ll be expected to escape to an extraction point.
So far, this feels like a pretty unique mix of genres. The squad-based gameplay with classes makes it feel familiar if you’ve seen or played Aliens: Fireteam Elite. But then the base building and defense gives it horde shooter survival vibes, with enemies being more dangerous as fights drag on.
Starship Troopers: Extermination is being made by Offworld Industries, the same developer behind the tactical FPS Squad, so the shooter aspect of the game will likely be solid. Though it remains to be seen if the formula of having to do objectives like destroying hives while defending bases is a combination that will work well in practice.
As for when the game will be out, Starship Troopers: Extermination is slated to be released on Steam sometime in 2023, but as an Early Access title. Which will mean that it will likely be off to a rocky start. It remains to be seen if Offworld Industries intends to release the game on other platforms once the game leaves early access and becomes available for real.
