Of all things, it appears that Instagram is working on an ability which would allow you to add music to profile pages. As with most of his discoveries, this particular feature was recently unearthed by trusted app reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi after scouring through the platform’s latest development codes.
Based on the screenshots provided by Paluzzi, users will be able to add music through the Edit Profile menu on Instagram. Here, tapping on the new Music section will bring you to its respective page where you can pick a song as well as have the option to add in an accompanying caption, which may presumably function like status updates on your profile. According to this screen, users are only limited to up to 40 characters to “express their mood,” per say.

Given that it is still a work in progress, it doesn’t seem that Paluzzi was able to test the new feature out. That being said, it’s not known how this new ability is supposed to work. If we were to speculate, Instagram may either provide users with built-in tracks, let them upload their own music, or give the option to select and link songs from a streaming service.
Uploading tracks may be unlikely, as it could lead to copyright infringement – unless the songs are created by the users themselves. Linking a song from a streaming service, on the other hand, will require Instagram to partner up with providers such as Spotify, Deezer and so on. From the three aforementioned, it seems like the first and last speculations are probably the more feasible approaches.
Of course, those who’ve been using social media for a very long time would know that Instagram isn’t the first to allow users to include music on their profile pages. Without a doubt, the feature’s reintroduction on the Meta-owned platform would invoke nostalgia of the now-defunct MySpace platform, which is among the first to provide this particular feature to its users.
Would this supposedly upcoming gimmick become a gamechanger for the social media scene? Highly unlikely, as it is definitely in the list of things that no one bothered to ask for. Nevertheless, we’re sure that some users out there will appreciate its inclusion as a new way to personalise their profile pages. However, like most novelties, it won’t be surprising that it will eventually wear off after a while.
