AirAsia has revealed that it managed to sell 500,000 tickets within 48 hours through its recent free seat promotion. Launched earlier this week on Monday, the budget airliner is offering would-be travellers with a total of five million trips for free for both domestic and international destinations — although the latter is only limited to the ASEAN region.
Calling the sale record-breaking, the carrier said it was the highest number of seats sold daily since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the AirAsia, the half a million figure within just two days can be broken down to almost a whopping 200 seats being snapped up every minute.
The promotion is ongoing until 25 September, and is available via both AirAsia’s app and website. Domestic destinations include Langkawi, Penang, and Kota Kinabalu — although keep in mind that you can only get free seats to Kota Kinabalu if you’re travelling from Kuching. Meanwhile, ASEAN destinations include Phuket, Krabi, and Chiang Mai in Thailand, Bali in Indonesia, and Cebu in the Philippines. It is important to note that while the flight tickets themselves are free, they do not include airport taxes, MAVCOM fees, fuel surcharges, and a variety of other fees.
All-in, the so-called “free” seats actually cost at least RM23 for domestic flights and start from RM54 for trips to the aforementioned ASEAN countries. If you have a bit more to spend and are interested in going a bit farther for your holiday, the company’s long-haul arm, AirAsia X, is also offering promotional prices for its routes.
Some of the destinations on sale include Bangkok, Seoul, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Auckland, and New Delhi, which start from RM499 for economy seats. Additionally, the airline announced upcoming routes to Jeddah, Tokyo and Sapporo, which start from RM599 for one-way economy seats and RM2,599 for premium flatbeds. The promo period for AirAsia X tickets is also until 25 September.
