Aside from launching the Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch Series 8 alongside iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Series as well as the second generation AirPods Pro, the recent Far Out event also saw the launch of the new Apple Watch SE. As you may recall, the original model was launched back in 2020.
Just like the Series 8, the 2022’s SE runs on the S8 processor. It is an interesting decision by Apple to fit an equal processor to the SE, considering that the 2020’s version which was launched alongside the S6-based Apple Watch Series 6 was fitted with an older processor, the S5.
In other words, all three Apple Watch models for 2022 are running on the same processor, regardless of their price points. The new SE also supports the newly announced Crash Detection feature similar to the Series 8 and Ultra.
Being the entry-level model though, there are quite a number of features that are missing from the SE when compared to its higher-end siblings. Among them includes the Always-On Display, ECG, and Blood Oxygen.
In addition to that, Apple also chooses not to fit the new temperature sensor into the 2022’s SE which means it is missing the retrospective ovulation estimates feature, unlike the Series 8 and Ultra. Furthermore, the company continues to use the second generation optical heart sensor from the 2020 model for this year’s SE.
While the smartwatch still features an aluminium casing, its back case is made from nylon composite material instead. Similar to the original 2020 model, the 2022 SE is still not dust-resistant but has a water-resistant rating of 50 meters and up to 18 hours of battery life.
When it comes to pricing, the 2022 SE still starts at RM1,199 for the stand-alone GPS 40mm variant. However, the starting price for the larger 44mm variant can be obtained for RM1,299 which is RM50 less than its 2020’s counterpart.
For the cellular model, the 40mm option starts at RM1,399 while the 44mm version is available from RM1,499 onwards. As a comparison, the launch price for the 2020’s SE with cellular capability was RM1,449 and RM1,599 respectively.
That means a saving of between RM50 to RM100 if you plan to get your hands on the 2022 release although you have to wait for now though before you can place your order. To be available in Midnight, Starlight, and Silver colourways, Apple has yet to announce the launch date for its new Apple SE in Malaysia.
