The idea of adapting the Naughty Dog game The Last of Us is just about as old as the game itself. A movie adaptation was first floated around all the way back in March of 2014. More recently in 2020, and with a higher chance to actually happen is a HBO TV series, with the game’s creator Neil Druckmann himself teasing the series. Fast forward about two-and-a-half years, there’s finally a glimpse of what the show will be like.
On the HBO Max YouTube channel, the company has put up a video showcasing a long list of what is coming to the streaming service. But near the very end is 20 or so seconds of The Last of Us TV series, with Pedro Pascal playing Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. One scene is just about a one-to-one recreation from the game, and will be immediately familiar to those who have played it.
If anything, the scene in question is evidence to the TV series adaptation of The Last of Us being very faithful to the game’s plot. No doubt there will still be some creative liberties being taken. But for what it’s worth, with the game’s creator being involved in the series, these will likely either be kept to a minimum, or will be “sanctioned” retcons, as it were.

To say that expectations for The Last of Us TV series are sky high is probably not an understatement. But fans still have quite a considerable wait before the series will air. The promo clip itself only says that the show will be “coming next year”, with no release window, never mind a precise release date, attached yet. If you want to watch the clip for yourself, you can jump straight to the 1:43 mark of the 2:20 video.
