Together with the Galaxy Z Flip4, Samsung has also brought forward another new foldable into the market at its Unpacked launch event tonight in the form of the Galaxy Z Fold4. Similar to the other model, one may deem the Z Fold4 as a facelift or an update rather than an evolution of last year’s Z Fold3.
Nevertheless, that does not mean the device is a drag. After all, the Galaxy Z Series is still Samsung’s premium offering and the Z Fold4 still has that allure even though it may not be as obvious as one may expect.
For starters, the new foldable is powered by the relatively new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 which provides some improvements in terms of performance over its 2021’s counterpart. Samsung was also quick to point out that Z Fold4 is the first device to be pre-installed with Android 12L which is a special variant of the operating software that has been designed for large-screen devices.
The Z Fold devices have always been big on multi-tasking given the screen size that it has and on the new model, Samsung has added a feature called Taskbar. If that name reminds you of the Taskbar on Windows, the version on Z Fold4 has a similar layout and is meant to allow users fast access to their favourite and recent apps on the device’s main screen.
Samsung has also implemented several new swipe gestures for multi-tasking while its partner Google added drag-and-drop support for apps such as Chrome and Gmail. Not to forget, Microsoft has also optimized its Office apps and Outlook for the new model.
One of the biggest upgrades that Samsung has brought to the Z Fold4 is the camera as the device features a 50MP f/1.8 Dual Pixel main camera. It is accompanied by a 12MP ultra-wide f/2.2 camera and 10MP f/2.4 telephoto camera that has 30X Space Zoom capability inclusive of 3x optical zoom.
For the under-display camera (UDC) on the main screen as well as the Cover Screen’s camera, they remained to be 4MP and 10MP cameras although Samsung said that the UDC on the Z Fold4 is less visible than its predecessor. Speaking about the display, the device continues to offer a 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X 120Hz main screen and a 6.2-inch HD+ Super AMOLED 120Hz Cover Screen.
Of course, S Pen support made a return once again to Z Fold4 and Samsung has even crafted a rather handy magnetic Standing Cover with Pen case for the device. However, S Pen is still not something that comes as standard for Z Fold4 and needs to be purchased separately.
Just like the Z Flip4, the company once against relying on the durable Armor Aluminium as the build material for Z Fold4’s chassis and hinge. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ which Samsung has previously used with the Galaxy S22 Series has been implemented on the device too to protect its Cover Screen and rear area.
The Z Fold4 continues to be powered by a 4400mAh battery and through the device’s Super Fast Charging feature, it takes around 30 minutes for the phone’s battery to go from 0% to 50%. This feature requires a charger with a power rating of 25W or higher which you have purchased separately.
Equipped with 12GB of RAM as standard, the Z Fold4 with 256GB internal storage is priced at RM6,799 while the 512GB variant goes for RM7,299. There is also the 1TB option which costs RM8,299 and can only be obtained exclusively from Samsung Malaysia Online Store.
Pre-order customers will be provided with Samsung Malaysia Online Store’s e-voucher worth RM650 that they can use to purchase additional Samsung products when they place their pre-order together with Z Fold4 Standing Cover and S Pen. Not only that, they will receive Samsung Care+ Extended Warranty for 1 year on top of the standard 1-year warranty.
