Football clubs are not usually where you would expect an esports team to sprout. But it looks like one local football club will be doing just that – starting its own esports team, with the club in question being TRW Kelantan FC.
Club owner Norizam Tukiman, who is also known as Zamsaham, made the announcement on Facebook. The resulting esports team will also be made a main business branch of The Red Warriors FC Berhad, according to the post. Though no further details were shared on the post, which suggests that things are still in the preliminary stages.
Naturally, this also means that TRW Kelantan FC has not decided on what games its esports team will play in. That being said, guesses include the variety of football-related games, such as EA Sports FC, Konami’s eFootball which replaced the Pro Evolution Soccer series, and whatever the game FIFA ends up coming up with.
Beyond football games, there are the usual suspects from the esports scene. These include the likes of Dota 2, League of Legends, Mobile Legends, PUBG and its Mobile variant. It would also be nice to see the team go into other niches like fighting games such as Street Fighter or Tekken, though whether or not that will happen remains to be seen.
It’s worth noting though that TRW Kelantan FC is not the first local football club to start its own esports division. Back in August of last year, Johor Darul Ta’zim FC (JDT) announced its own esports debut, and its participation in the inaugural Champions eFootball tourney a month later. More recently, in April the Johor club announced its participation in the unifi eMFL Liga Super 2022, as well as a collaboration with GBX Esports Team to form teams under the JDT and JDT II banner.
