Despite having been first announced all the way back in 2018, we’ve never gotten a clear look what that the game looks like. Perhaps the closest we ever got was an asset leak from what was supposedly a 2018 build. Though now, Bethesda has a new reveal trailer that shows off what the game will look like when it releases next year, with a healthy dose of gameplay.
As is usual with Bethesda games, Starfield looks to be playable in both first- and third-person. Other familiar elements include a level and experience-based progression system, lockpicking, as well as crafting. Further in the video, we also see the very familiar character creation system. Which, if you’ve played Fallout 4 specifically, will look very familiar.
Other familiar elements include base building which, according to the trailer, means passive resource gathering. Again, very Fallout 4-like. You’re also shown that you can customise your own ship, with some appropriate stat changes that go with them.
At the end of the trailer, game director and Bethesda studio head Todd Howard says there are over 100 star systems, totaling up to over 1000 planets in Starfield serving as playable areas. Naturally, this element has drawn comparisons to No Man’s Sky, which already has very similar systems in place, and at a much larger scale.
Running on the Creation Engine 2, Starfield looks undoubtedly pretty. Both the environments and the NPCs show a high enough level of fidelity, but the latter does look a little rigid at certain points. Once again, very Fallout 4-like. Though it remains to be seen if, in Bethesda tradition, the game will be released in a state that requires community bug fixes.
Overall, though, it’s not the most exciting of trailers. And until now, Starfield still only has a vague 2023 release date. Hopefully Bethesda has more to show of the game by the time the game releases, whenever it happens.
