Final Fantasy XVI saw its development, and by extension its release, pushed back to an unspecified date. Previously, the game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida, who is also the producer of the Final Fantasy XIV MMO, said that an announcement will take place in spring 2022. This timing happens to coincide with the PlayStation State of Play broadcast, where a new trailer for the game has been revealed.
And it’s a very impressive trailer, to say the least. In addition to combat as the protagonist Clive, we also see larger scale battles between Eikons, the name of the summons for Final Fantasy XVI. And to match their epic proportions are the equally bloated damage and health numbers. While it makes for a grand spectacle, what the game would play like during these sequences is unclear. One would hope that the game would be able to recreate the magic of the Metal Gear Rex and Metal Gear Ray fight in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
The trailer also provides a slightly better look at the Eikons that have been shown before, as well as a few new ones. Naturally Phoenix, Ifrit, Shiva and Titan make a return. But in addition to those four, the new trailer also shows the Final Fantasy XVI rendition of Garuda, Ramuh, Odin and Bahamut. The trailer ends with a curious scene depicting two Ifrits facing each other.
Most importantly, the trailer also provides us with a release window for Final Fantasy XVI. The game will be released in summer 2023, which is between late June and late September. It’s still a long way to go, which is no real surprise considering the previous delay. Here’s hoping that Square Enix has more trailers to show in the meantime, and hopefully they get down to the nitty-gritty of the gamplay.
