The Last of Us is not exactly a game that desperately needs the remake treatment. First released back in 2013 for the PS3, it’s a game that has aged relatively well. But rumour has it that the game is getting a remake for the PS5. And the project is so close to completion that it may get a release by the end of this year.
This bit of info comes courtesy of Jeff Grubb of GamesBeat via the most recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast. Grubb says that “I keep hearing that its coming out this year”. He would later continue to claim that it will be out in the usual holiday season, and says that he’s “pretty confident about that too”.
Prior to this, prominent video games leakster Tom Henderson had, back in January, made a similar claim. Video games news outlet VGC also corroborates the reports, claiming that “the unannounced game is nearing completion”, citing its own sources.
As mentioned earlier, The Last of Us is not a game that particularly needs the remake treatment. At nine years old, it’s probably not something that would get that much of an update beyond graphics with a remake. If anything, it’s probably more of the same that the PS4 remaster that came a year after its initial launch already gave us. Even that game got an improvement in load times which came ahead of the launch of the PS5.
The remake is also set to be released just shy of two years after the release of the sequel, adding to the weird timing of it all. On a related note, The Last of Us is also getting a HBO TV show, which probably make more sense these days, where adapting games to shows look to be the norm of the two industries.
