Sony has officially launched its WH-1000XM5, the successor and follow-up to its 2020 act, the WH-1000XM4. Much like its predecessor, the WH-1000XM5 are Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) wireless headphones that are designed to provide a “distraction-free” experience for users, when listening to their favourite music.
In terms of components, each earcup of the WH-1000XM5 house a new, specially designed 30mm driver made out of carbon fibre composite material that Sony says improves high-frequency sensitivity. Therefore allowing for a more natural audio experience. Additionally, the brand’s new wireless headphones also uses gold in its manufacturing process, thus providing improved connectivity and optimised circuitry.
Moving on, the WH-1000XM5 also shows off a brand new design and chassis; the headband is thinner, while the earcups also sport what Sony describes as an all-new “noiseless design”. On top of that, the headphones are also furnished with a new soft fit leather material for better and improved comfort, as well as a new stepless slider for the earcups.
Much like its predecessor, the WH-1000XM5 also features several of the same audio features that many fans of the WH series have come to enjoy. This includes access to the same Hi-Res Audio, courtesy of Sony’s own audio coding technology, LDAC, and its DSEE Extreme audio upscaling technology that digitally brings music files up to a higher quality, in real-time. Moreover, it also utilises eight beamforming microphones – four on each cup – and an AI-based noise reduction structure that ensures crystal-clear voice call, with wind noise and ambient sound reduction.
Battery-wise, Sony assures us that the WH-1000XM5 is rated to run for 30 hours continuously, making it a perfect companion on long travels. Also, if you need to rush, charging the WH-1000XM5s via USB-C PD for just three minutes can provide the headphones with three hours of charging.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 is already available for pre-order via Sony’s online store and can be purchased in either Black or Grey. To sweeten the deal, early birds who preorder the headphones from now until 5 June will receive an STM Myth 18L backpack worth RM399 for free, while stocks last. The headphones are expected be available sometime in early June.
