World of Tanks and World of Warships developer Wargaming may be based in Cyprus, but it started out in Belarus. Until recently, it still had a major presence in the country, as well as Russia. That is, until a recent statement that announces the company’s departure from both countries.
The company says that it has transferred its live games business in Russia and Belarus “to local management of Lesta Studio that is no longer affiliated with Wargaming”. It also expects to “suffer substantial losses as a direct result of this decision”. The company is also in the process of closing down its studio in Minsk, Belarus, where the company was born.
Despite the substantial losses the company expects to get hit by, Wargaming says that it is “confident in the future of our business and are committed to delivering quality games to our players”. Though what this means to players of World of Tanks, as well as World of Warships, is unclear.
Wargaming does not say that this decision is related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, even if it may seem that way. Though it’s worth noting that the company did previously let go of former Creative Director Sergey Burkatovskiy for his open support towards the invasion.
