Along with the unveiling of Android 12 last year, Google also announced and showcased its new Material You theme which offered an updated, stylish, and customisable interface. However, only a handful of Android users got to experience it, as the theme was only rolled out to the company’s own Pixel phones and a handful of Samsung devices.
But that’s about to change, according to Google’s latest post on its developers blog.
The company says that the Material You theme will soon roll out to non-Pixel devices sometime this year. While it did not detail which specific devices will receive the update, Google noted that the list includes those from OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo, Realme, Xiaomi, other Samsung phones, and many others.
To recap, the theme offers new customisation options such as dynamic colours, widgets, and icons – providing users with a more cleaner, stylish, and comprehensive Android interface. Furthermore, what’s even more interesting is that personalised themes set by users via Material You will also be reflected on apps within the Google ecosystem, including Gmail, Meet, and Drive. Other than that, there’s also an all-new Privacy Dashboard as well, which provides users quick access to privacy settings such as the ability to tweak permissions and data accessibility for certain apps.
Unfortunately, Google did not mention when exactly the new Material You theme is expected to land on non-Pixel Android smartphones. Nevertheless, it is very likely that phone brands will individually announce its arrival or inclusion to their devices in the near future.
