A Malaysian-based custom keyboard outfit, Rebult Keyboards has recently announced that it has collaborated with Royal Selangor to come out with a limited edition keycap that is made from pewter. As if it is not enough that this is a project by two Malaysian companies, they have also decided to use durian, which is a fruit of obsession for many Malaysians out there, as the key theme of the keycap.
According to the listing on Rebult’s website as well as its Facebook page, each Durian Artisan Pewter Keycap is made from a master mould that was handmade by a Royal Selangor sculptor and is also finished by hand. As you may be able to guess, this is the first time that Royal Selangor has made a keycap for mechanical keyboards.
Rebult has noted that the keycap may have some “imperfections” including having a slightly off-centre base alongside something that looked like spillover between the base keycap and the durian. This is due to the mould construction, casting process, and the keycap’s shape according to the company.
Meanwhile, only 200 units of the keycap will be made available for sale and each of them will indeed be accompanied by a numbered authentication card. Priced at RM359 each, the Durian Artisan Pewter Keycap can be obtained through Rebult’s website on 19 February at 10 PM Malaysian time.
