With battle royales having effectively supplanted MOBAs as the current gaming trend, only two of the latter really remain now that the dust has settled – Dota 2 and League of Legends. Another contender once upon a time was Heroes of Newerth, which has lost the battle for the limelight to the aforementioned two ages ago. And it looks like the game is fading away for good in June next year.
On the game’s official Facebook page, Frostburn Studios announced that Heroes of Newerth will come to an end on 20 June 2022. With that, the purchase of the Gold Coin premium currency is no longer possible. New accounts can still be created, but only until 31 December.
Starting from 20 December, Heroes of Newerth will also be holding permanent events that will see increased drop rates for Silver Coins and Diamond Chests. Some items that can be bought with Gold Coins will also be made available for purchase with Silver Coins.
In all honesty though, it’s a surprise that Heroes of Newerth lasted this long to begin with. Not counting the mobile MOBA scene, the dominance of Dota 2 and LoL have been nearly unbreakable. Add that to the egregious balance issues HoN had in the early 2010s, and it’s a wonder that enough people like the game enough to spend money on it to keep it going for this long.
This closure announcement suggests that maybe even that has started to dwindle; keeping the game alive is starting to cost than the money it is making. But if you’re feeling like playing a MOBA where the slightest early advantage lets one team outrageously snowball and curb stomp the other, then you have six months left to do so.
