AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) upscaling technology is now available as a plugin for Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. For those of you who have been living under a rock, FSR is basically AMD’s answer to NVIDIA’s DLSS technology, used in tandem with games that enable real-time ray-tracing, optimising gameplay by rendering it at a lower resolution and then upscaling it to a display’s native resolution. Usually with the use of AI and at the cost of visual quality.
In addition to its availability, the GPUOpen page also provides a quick overview of the plugin’s use across several quality settings. Additionally, the FSR plugin also features a Contrast Adaptive Sharpening plug, something that developers must ensure that other existing CAS integrations are disabled before being activated. To that end, the FSR plugin will work with Unreal Engine version 4.271.1.
On another note, it is a little odd that AMD isn’t making the plugin available for the current Unreal Engine 5, especially since its Green Team rival already has DLSS plugins available on said engine.
