After Kenya, Netflix is also making its free tier available to users in Vietnam. In case you are not familiar with it, the free plan also has no ads and won’t ask for any payment information when users create a free account.
The only catch is that it is exclusive to Android smartphones and you can’t cast content to a TV or other display. Netflix also limits the titles available under the free plan to only a select few popular ones, meaning users have to pick up the paid plan if they want to watch other titles.
As with the free plan in Kenya, free users in Vietnam also can’t download episodes for offline viewing, but Netflix says this feature will be enabled in the near future. Everything else works as is, including the ability to make up to five profiles. That being said, the company makes no mention of whether free accounts have access to the recently launched Games feature.
It seems that the streaming giant is using this free plan to attract more subscribers by hooking them in and hoping they’ll love it enough to upgrade to watch on bigger screens. Vietnam has a population of more than 97 million and in 2019, Netflix said that its subscriber base in the country was less than 300,000. This makes Vietnam a huge untapped market for Netflix, whose subscriber growth has been slowing down lately.
