As 2021 draws nearer to a close, it’s also about that time where chipmakers such as Qualcomm begin teasing its fans with the slivers and morsels of information about its next-generation flagship Snapdragon chipset. In this case, an image of a phone’s display, seemingly showing off details of a supposed Snapdragon 898, recently made its way online.
The image, which first appeared on the popular Chinese social media platform, Weibo, has since been deleted, but not before being picked up by several eagle-eyed viewers. Based on the image, the alleged Snapdragon 898 goes by the device designation SM8450, is an octa-core processor, and uses three clusters, based on a big.LITTLE configuration. Breaking down the last point, that configuration includes on what is expected to be a Cortex-X2 core running at 3GHz, three Cortex-A710 cores running at 2.5GHz, and four efficient Cortex-A510 cores running at 1.79GHz.
GPU-wise, the Snapdragon 898 is shown to be running on an Adreno 730 integrated GPU, but sadly, there are not performance metrics of the module at current. Having said that, the next SoC is expected to be based on the new Samsung 4nm die lithography that, according to rumours, could translate into a 20% increase in performance, versus the current Adreno 660 GPU. On another note, while it isn’t explicitly listed on the Device Info HW app, the Snapdragon 898 SoC is also expected to be paired with Qualcomm’s X65 5G modem.
At the time of writing, Qualcomm has yet to make any official announcements or statements on this. So, take this news with a pinch of salt.
