It won’t be until early next year that Xiaomi will launch the latest entry to its flagship smartphone line. However, it looks like we may not have to wait long to see it, as the device in question has been reported to be seen in the wild.
Photos of the alleged Xiaomi 12 were shared by YouTuber Mukul Sharma on Twitter, although it was not specified where he had obtained them from. The two provided images revealed the smartphone to be wrapped in a case that hides most of its design, except for one particular feature that stands out: a tall aspect ratio.
If true, this seemingly indicates that Xiaomi may have taken some design inspiration from the current generation Xperia line of smartphones. At a glance, it does appear that the Chinese tech giant’s latest flagship also offers a 21:9 aspect ratio similar to Sony’s handsets, though it is hard to properly confirm this due to the angles it is shot from.

Besides that, the other not-so-hidden features seen on the supposed Xiaomi 12 is a top-centered camera cutout on its display, volume rockers and lock button on its right hand side, and a USB-C port on the bottom. Unfortunately, there are no shots of its rear design, so it is not known how many or what type of cameras the new phone will be equipped with.
It would be interesting if this leak is proven to be true when the time comes. Not only would it mean that Xiaomi is trying something new with its flagship phones’ displays, this change in design will also have it competing directly with Sony in the high aspect ratio smartphone niche.
