Shopee has updated their air waybill (AWB) policy to remove the phone numbers of buyers from being displayed on courier packages. The rule, which kicked in starting 21 October, is part of Shopee’s efforts to increase customer privacy by protecting their data, or at least, part of it.
Usually, all your information would be displayed on the AWB, which is the label on your package that contains your name, your phone number, your address, and the seller’s information. With the new policy, the buyer’s phone number will be omitted from the AWB. That being said, Shopee says that the couriers can still look up your number through their own system if they need to contact you for delivery purposes.
Out of seven Shopee Supported logistics partners, the new policy somehow only applies to J&T Express and Ninja Van for the time being. With even Shopee’s own in-house logistic arm seemingly exempted from this new rule, the platform makes no mention of whether it will be expanded to other logistic providers in the near future.
The documentation for the policy also said that the AWB for Pos Laju and City-Link Express will continue to display the buyer’s phone number. Ultimately though, you may want to make it a habit to check the details on your package’s AWB and redact any personal information before you throw it out in order to avoid the information from falling into the wrong hands.
