Remember back in December last year, a PS5 faceplate maker called Dbrand dared Sony Interactive Entertainment to sue them? That hasn’t happened yet but it looks like the company is already giving up on its side of the business that involves PS5 faceplates. Because while SIE has not yet sued, it has sent out a cease and desist letter.
The Canadian company made waves last year, announcing that it’s making PS5 faceplates so soon after another got served the legal letter. It was a bold move for sure, and one that we’d like to think many expected to not go well. But it is still surprising that it stayed up for almost a whole year.
Dbrand has a post on its subreddit which announces its decision to pull its PS5 faceplates, as well as a long explanation as to why. While ultimately is because of the cease and desist letter by SIE, the company goes on to justify in lengthy detail the legality of its selling faceplates. There’s even a comparison to Squid Game being made in the post too.
The long post also speculates that SIE issued its cease and desist letter because it intends to sell its own black faceplates for the PS5. Not surprising, considering there are black DualSense controllers and Pulse 3D headsets now. Then at the end there’s an iconic line from The Dark Knight Batman film, but twisted to referencing Dbrand faceplates to being hot scalper targets.
