Monster Hunter Rise will be making its way to PC on 12 January next year. And later in the year, the Sunbreak expansion will get a simultaneous release on PC and the Nintendo Switch. But it looks like both platforms will continue to be separate islands with separate player bases. Capcom has announced on social media that Monster Hunter Rise will not be getting either cross save or cross play.
The exact wording of the statement is a little strange. For one, it says that the company has “found we are unable to implement it this time”, after “looking into it throughout the development process”. This is especially because, in a survey to players late last month, the publisher asked if players would be interested in the two features once the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise comes about. This also dashes any hopes of cross save or cross play for this generation of Monster Hunter since the statement says that the two features won’t be implemented “this time” rather than “at this time”.
We’ve heard your requests for Cross-Save / Cross-Play for #MHRise & #Sunbreak, but unfortunately, after looking into it throughout the development process, we found we are unable to implement it this time. As always, we appreciate your continued feedback and support.

On one hand, it’s entirely possible that there actually is some technical issue or other that Capcom did not identify earlier that prevented the implementation of cross save or cross play. But on the other, it may be a licensing issue pertaining to DLC IPs. After all, one reason Monster Hunter World and its Iceborne expansion could not support cross save and cross play was the Horizon Zero Dawn event quests that was available on the PS4, but not PC.
