The YTL Foundation has announced that Yes will be extending its Learn From Home initiative until September 2022. The programme gives eligible students from selected higher educational institutions access to free 7GB data quota per month.
The telco has partnered with 35 colleges and universities, aiming to give both staff and students in need affordable internet in addition to the incentives given under the government’s Jaringan Prihatin scheme. Among those listed include University Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), and many more. While YTL says that they are open to more universities joining the programme, those institutions will have to approach them though.
When asked about any possible limitations on the free data, YTL said that they trust the students to act as responsible adults and will not impose any restrictions. This is unlike the free 1GB daily data given by most telcos, which limits the usage to just productivity and learning apps.
YTL Communications CEO Wing K. Lee said that while the average Yes 4G user goes through 10-12GB of monthly data during the last 18 months, he expects the usage to go down amongst university students as most are heading back to campus and taking part in face-to-face classes.
However, do take note that the deadline to apply for this September 2022 extension is going to take place this coming Saturday, 16 October regardless of whether you are already a Learn From Home SIM recipient or you’re just about to sign up.
