Wizards of the Coast is probably a name known to most people as makers of fantasy tabletop RPGs or trading card games. But it looks like the company is diversifying into the video games space, and of the third-person variety specifically. And it will be using the GI Joe IP for it too.
A list of jobs have opened up at the Hasbro subsidiary, according to a report by PC Gamer. The jobs are available at the company’s New Raleigh-Durham Studio, and are related to the making of the company’s “first multi-platform, Action-Adventure video game set in the GI JOE Universe”. At the time of writing, four job titles are available, which are for the art director, lead animator, lead game designer and technical director.
The roles mention prior experience with third person action-adventure games as either a bonus or requirement. Wizards of the Coast is looking to make a high budget game too, judging from the generous sprinkling of AAA around the four job openings.
At any rate, a third-person action-adventure game is certainly quite out of left field for Wizards of the Coast. GI Joe is also quite the IP to wet its feet with, though not a surprising one. After all, parent company Hasbro does own the rights to the name. While it’s definitely still too early to say anything about the game, here’s hoping it ends up better than the one that was released late last year.
