Sonos officially announced its 2nd generation Beam soundbar today. As the follow-up to the original Beam, the new soundbar features a few improvements while retaining much of what made its predecessor popular.
Firstly, the Beam Gen 2 now supports Dolby Atmos, enabling the soundbar to provide a more immersive experience through the use of 3D Audio, all through a single output unit. On that note, the new soundbar also comes with a new HDMI eARC connection, giving it the ability to support a wider range of audio formats. This includes Stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos, to name a few.
Once again and as most Sonos products do, it also has an Ethernet port for hardwire support to your network. On top of that, the soundbar also comes with built-in Wi-Fi support for both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wavelengths.
Beneath its machine-drilled polycarbonate grille, the Beam Gen 2 houses five Class D digital amplifiers, a centre tweeter, four midwoofers, and three passive radiators that enhance the soundbar’s low frequencies. Beyond that, the Beam Gen 2 retains virtually all of the same features and functions as the first generation Beam, including the control schemes and support for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
Again, like all Sonos products, the Beam Gen 2 can also be connected and controlled via the brand’s dedicated Sonos S2 app, which is available on both Google Play and the Apple App Store. However, do note that Sonos’ spatial optimisation feature, TruePlay is still not yet available for Android devices, and is therefore limited to iOS.
Pricing for the Sonos Beam Gen 2 is set at RM2699. The soundbar will be physically available for purchase in Malaysia from 6 October onwards. On that note, the brand is currently taking preorders for the soundbar via its official product page, so if you’re keen on owning one, you can head on over to register your interest.
