It turns out that last week’s leak was right. DJI has officially launched the fifth iteration of its Osmo Mobile smartphone gimbal, precisely on the date suggested by WinFuture’s Roland Quandt. As you may recall from our previous report, what sets this model apart from its predecessors is the inclusion of a new built-in extension rod which allows the phone mount to be, well, extended a la a selfie stick.
The new DJI Osmo Mobile 5 (OM 5) is slightly smaller and lighter than last year’s model, and also features a new design. Situated in between its magnetic mount and grip is the aforementioned collapsable 8.4-inch rod that can be manually extended to more height to your shots or to capture wider selfies. While most of the button interfaces on the grip are unchanged, there is a new button that lets you quickly access some of the main features of the gimbal.
Additionally, the phone clamp attachment for the onboard magnetic mount has been improved, enabling them to stretch out further in order to accommodate larger phones – especially those that are protected with a case. DJI also upgraded the device’s gimbal motors, which now provides better stabilisation and accurate tilting.
It appears that the new design does impact the new gimbal’s battery life, however. According to DJI, the OM 5 is only able to last up to six and a half hours, which is more than half less than the 15-hour battery on the Osmo Mobile 4.
In terms of upgrades on the software side of things, the OM 5 comes with the brand’s Active Track 4.0 feature with better facial recognition and tracking for an improved responsive performance, and there’s also the new Shotguides feature that scans your surroundings and provides suggestions on what to shoot. Upon filming all of the recommended clips, Shotguides will then edit them into a short feature video via the DJI Mimo mobile app.
Other than that, pretty much all of the familiar features found on last year’s model have made their way to the new OM 5. These include the various shooting modes such as SpinShot, dolly zoom, CloneMe Panoramas, Hyperlapse, Timelapse, Motionlapse, and many others.
Introduced alongside the DJI OM 5 is the new DJI Fill Light Phone Clamp. This is basically the same (and improved) clamp attachment that was mentioned earlier, but with built-in lights for brighter selfies. At the same time, the company also launched the Osmo Mobile 4 SE, which is pretty much last year’s OM 4 but featuring the upgraded phone clamp.
Those interested may pre-order the DJI Osmo Mobile 5 starting today at RM689 via the brand’s official stores on Shopee and Lazada, as well as authorised retailers and partners nationwide. As for its availability, the company says that the new gimbal is expected to arrive in Malaysia on 15 September onwards. The Fill Light Phone Clamp, on the other hand, will be priced at RM199 and is slated to arrive in late October.
Meanwhile, you can actually purchase the OM 4 SE starting today at RM459 via the DJI stores on Shopee and Lazada. For your reference, last year’s Osmo Mobile 4 initially launched in Malaysia at RM599.
