As previously teased by Geoff Keighley, Gamescom saw the unveiling of the new Saints Row game. And it’s definitely a reboot without being a remaster, remake, or sequel. The new crew consists of four entirely different people, with a different Boss as the playable character as well.
The Saints Row announcement trailer gives us a look at the the brand new cast, and you can sort of see each of them being parallels of the previous games’ main crew. There’s the new Boss which is the customisable playable character, now a canonically black lady as opposed to the previous canon’s white dude. Other members include Kevin, Eli and Neenah. They look like they’re filling the roles of Johnny Gat, Pierce and Shaundi, even if they do entirely different things.
Beyond the characters, the announcement trailer gives us a look at the new Saints Row game’s setting too. The place is Santo Ileso, a fictional part of the American Southwest desert. The developers at Volition say this is the “biggest and best Saints Row playground ever created”, which is something to expect from a new entry. But despite the new story, characters and locale, it’s safe to say that you’ll be doing the familiar things like deposing the existing gangs to establish your own.
The Saints Row reboot is currently scheduled for release on 25 February 2022. It will be available on both generations of both home console brands. But on PC, it looks to be an Epic Games Store exclusive. No details on if this is a permanent or timed deal, so expect it to not be on Steam for at least one year, if not forever.
