Electronic Arts has announced that Battlefield 2042 will not have a singleplayer campaign. This leaves a void for those who are about the story behind the game’s large scale conflict. To fill it, the publisher has released a nine-minute short film to tell that story.
The trailer features a returning character from the series, namely Kimble “Irish” Graves from Battlefield 4. He is also one of the 10 specialist characters that will be playable in Battlefield 2042.
For the story trailer itself, there’s just enough to make sense of why the No-Pats of Battlefield 2042 will be fighting. The short film explains that some experimental weapon McGuffin or other will be the trigger for the next large scale war between the usual suspects – the US and Russia. But before that happens, the two factions of No-Pats will have their own war first, to decide if one of the superpowers gets the McGuffin, or if the No-Pats use it to become one themselves.
Of course, the short film itself is a little more nuanced than that, even if just barely. So give it a watch if you’re feeling invested in the Battlefield 2042 universe. The game itself will launch on 22 October, with crossplay between PC and next-gen consoles.
