R2-D2 is perhaps one of the most beloved characters from the Star Wars franchise, with almost countless toys and merchandise – including two different LEGO releases. Adding to that list is a newly announced Tamagotchi toy by both Disney and Bandai, where you’ll be able to take care of your very own digital pocket version of the astromech droid.
The new Tamagotchi arrives in the traditional egg-shaped design while also sporting R2-D2’s iconic design elements presented in two colour options for its body: white and translucent blue. The latter is more in line with the droid’s actual colour scheme, of course. The toy also comes with a 24 x 30 pixelated monochrome LCD display, with three physical buttons situated beneath it.
While the overall gameplay for the R2-D2 Tamagotchi remains unchanged from Bandai’s more recent releases, the device does come with exclusive Star Wars-themed activities for training the beloved Star Wars droid and also keeping it entertained. According to the sci-fi franchise’s official website, you’ll be able to train R2 in 19 different skills and play nine different games with it, including a firefighting mini-game and even holochess (aka Dejarik).
Since R2 is practically a droid, you’re probably wondering if there are any feeding or hygiene related activities to be done. The answer to that is “yes”, and you’ll also be glad(?) to know that it does not leave any… litter for you to clean up. So instead of feeding it, you are required to charge its in-game battery, as well as keeping it clean when it gets too dirty. A very clever workaround there, Disney and Bandai.
The new R2-D2 Tamagotchi will be released in the US on 11 November 2021, and pre-order via Amazon is slated to open on 3 August at 12pm Eastern Time. Disney and Bandai has yet to reveal its price and it is not known whether the toy will see an international release in the near future.
