For a while now, IKEA has been introducing new products that function as both home appliances and furniture, as seen with its Symfonisk series of speakers. Continuing that run, the Swedish furniture giant has recently unveiled the Starkvind, an air purifier which also doubles as a minimalist-looking side table.
The new product is notably large (it is a table after all), with its main air purifier unit situated in between the attached table top and legs. The Starkvind features five different fan speeds that can be adjusted manually, or automatically via the IKEA Home app. For the latter, built within the air purifier unit is a sensor that is able to determine the recommended fan speed based on the amount of smaller particles in the air, which will also be displayed on the app for your reference.
IKEA claims that the Starkvind’s three-filter system is capable of capturing bigger particles such as hair and dust, 99.5% of smaller airborne particles that measure less than 2.5 micrometers such as dust and pollen, as well as pollutants like formaldehyde and bad odors. Coverage-wise, the company says that the air purifier + side table combo has an effective range of up to 215 square feet.
The new Starkvind is slated to arrive in the US branches of IKEA this October and will retail for US$ 189 (~RM 798). It is also worth noting that a more affordable floor-standalone version of the air purifier will also be released alongside the side table model, priced at US$ 129 (~RM 545). So far there’s no word on whether IKEA is planning to have the Starkvind variants to be available in other regions.
Alternatively, if you’re looking for something slightly smaller, then you might want to consider the brand’s existing Förnuftig air purifier. Unlike the Starkvind, this smaller model is already available in Malaysia and is priced at RM 299.
